Tra i primi produttori ad annunciare una scheda grafica dual-gpu di classe Radeon HD 4870 X2 vi è Gainward, azienda, già ben nota tra i partner di primo piano di NVIDIA, che da qualche mese ha aggiunto al suo catalogo prodotti basati sulla tecnologia video ATI di AMD.
La nuova Gainward Radeon HD 4870 X2 è costruita intorno a due processori grafici ATI RV770 ed è equipaggiata con 2GB di RAM G-DDR5. Tale memoria è presente al momento soltanto su questa tipologia di video card e assicura una banda passante che è circa il doppio di quella offerta dai chip G-DDR3 o G-DDR4. Le G-DDR5 hanno una frequenza del clock fisico pari a 900MHz; tuttavia la frequenza effettiva in quad data rate è pari a 4x900MHz ovvero 3.6GHz.
Le gpu RV770 della HD 4870 X2 di Gainward lavorano a 750MHz e supportano le API Microsoft DirectX 10.1; ciascuna integra 800 stream processor ed è connessa ai chip di RAM mediante un bus dedicato a 256-bit.
