E' disponibile la release finale della distribuzione Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Long-Term Support), il cui nome in codice è "Hardy Heron", finalizzata alla configurazione sia dei sistemi di tipo desktop (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition, è liberamente scaricabile, Canonical garantisce una durata del supporto pari a tre anni, ndr) che di quelli di tipo server (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server Edition, è a pagamento, Canonical garantisce una durata del supporto pari a cinque anni, ndr). In particolare, per ciascuna delle due Edition, sono liberamente scaricabili una iso per architetture hardware x86 ed una iso per le più recenti piattaforme hardware x64 (basate, come è noto, sui processori AMD Athlon64, AMD Opteron, Intel Xeon con EM64T e Core 2).
La Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition offre un nuovo installer Wubi, una maggiore stabilità operativa e gran parte delle applicazioni di terze parti in versione rinnovata, tra cui KDE 3.5.9, GNOME 2.22, OpenOffice.org 2.4.0rc2 e X.org 7.3. La Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server Edition migliora il supporto delle tecnologia di virtualizzazione degli ambienti, ma anche quello di KVM e iSCSI, ed è dotata di alcune soluzioni finalizzate alla messa in sicurezza del server. Include Apache 2.2, PostgreSQL 8.3, PHP 5.2.4 e LTSP 5.0.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS raises the bar on the Linux desktop experience.
