Micron Technology ha annunciato di aver avviato la fase di produzione dei nuovi moduli di memoria RAM di tipo DDR4 al fine di renderli disponibili in tempo per il lancio dei nuovi processori Xeon E5-2600 v3 di Intel, pianificato per la seconda parte dell'anno corrente.
Come si deduce dalla tipologia di cpu a cui sono destinati inizialmente, i nuovi moduli DDR4 di Micron sono quindi indirizzati all'ambito aziendale, e più in dettaglio al segmento enterprise, dove possono essere impiegati per i sistemi dei data center.
Micron ha inoltre sottolineato che i nuovi moduli di DDR4 sono caratterizzati da una capacità di trasferimento dati pari a 2133 MT/s; inoltre il produtture ha già realizzato dei campioni di RAM DDR4 ancora più performanti (2400 MT/s), la cui commercializzazione è tuttavia pianificata per il prossimo anno.

The improved power and performance of DDR4 technology is a critical requirement for the growing enterprise computing market, delivering a power improvement of up to 35% compared to standard DDR3.
Micron is ramping its 4 Gb-based DDR4 module production at 2133 megatransfers per second (MT/s) in support of Intel's Xeon processor E5-2600 v3 product family-based systems. Micron is also sampling a 2400 MT/s device in anticipation of follow-on products targeted for 2015.
"Our JEDEC-compliant portfolio showcases the performance and power benefits that DDR4 products can provide for our customers," said Robert Feurle, Micron's vice president of marketing and program management. "As a result of Micron's close engagement with our key enabling partners, we are well positioned to bring this exciting new technology to market."

Micron's fully JEDEC-compliant DDR4 portfolio includes RDIMMs, LRDIMMs, VLP RDIMMs, UDIMMs and SODIMMs (ECC and non-ECC), as well as x4, x8 and x16 components. NVDIMM customer samples are expected in the early 3Q14 timeframe.
