SAGE is a new OpenGL driver from our Daniel Borca: its code is not based on Mesa nor it is based on OpenGL Sample Implementation code but it just reflects a idea of author about implementing a clean vertex engine. This project was written completely on a Slackware Linux machine, but there is a Windows version available too.
These are the main functionalities:
- Fast 3DNow! and SSE support;
- Texture rescaling for cards that don't support large textures;
- Vertex buffers support;
- EXT_texture_env_combine emulation for cards that don't support it.
So the goal of SAGE OpenGL driver is to extend old hardware compatibility, like 3dfx Voodoo2 card, with some newer OpenGL games and to improve OpenGL rendering of last 3dfx cards like Voodoo4/5 series. We have tested Unreal Tournament for Windows via OpenGL with this new opengl32.dll library using a 3dfx Voodoo5 6000 card: well, running the game at 32 bit color depth we got a superior image quality than by GLide mode with a small (and acceptable) frames fall.
SAGE supports these 3dfx cards: Voodoo Graphics, Voodoo Rush, Voodoo2, Voodoo Banshee, Voodoo3, Voodoo4 and Voodoo5. Just you try it and report your feedback in our forums to allow us new improvements and software updates.
Good luck, 3dfx users.
