Con il comunicato stampa di seguito allegato, Seagate Technology ha annunciato i suoi SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive) di terza generazione. Le nuove soluzioni, che abbinano chip di veloce memoria NAND Flash tipica degli SSD ai dischi magnetici comunemente utilizzati per la realizzazione degli HDD, sono disponibili in triplice versione, essendo utilizzabili con i notebook, i notebook ultrasottili (in questo caso gli SSHD hanno un altezza pari a 7mm) e i desktop rispettivamente.

In accordo alla presentazione di Seagate, gli SSHD per notebook sono disponibili con una capacità di memorizzazione pari a un massimo di 1TB, mentre per quelli con design più sottile la massima capacità diminuisce fino a 500GB. Si tratta quindi di valori sostanzialmente equivalenti a quelli dei comuni HDD per notebook, a fronte di prestazioni che il produttore indica come fino a cinque volte superiori.

I nuovi SSHD per desktop di Seagate hanno invece una capacità massima pari a 2TB, a cui il vendor è solito abbinare fino a 8GB di NAND flash; in tal modo i nuovoi drive sono in grado di accelerare alcuni ambiti applicativi (come il caricamento del Sistema Operativo e dei programmi più in generale) fino a 4 volte rispetto alle performance ottenibili con i dischi rigidi, pur garantendo una capacità sostanzialmente elevata e costi inferiori a quelli degli SSD standard.

With storage performance up to 40 percent faster than previous generations, the Laptop and Laptop Thin SSHDs can add as much as 30 percent to total system performance – regardless of the processor inside the system. In fact according to PC Mark Vantage tests every action related to getting information from storage is faster- booting, loading files and applications, and running computer-based tasks.

With a massive 1TB of capacity available, the Laptop SSHD provides the space needed to download, store and stream rich media content such as gaming or high-definition video without sacrificing performance or responsiveness. And with a 500GB option measuring only 7mm-high, the Laptop Thin SSHD can be incorporated into most ultra-thin, ultra-sleek laptop systems.
